The Day After Christmas
65
Hip… Hip… Hooray! The anticipation and excitement of Christmas is over! The stress of the up coming holidays is slowly leaving our brains. In a blink of an eye Santa has left the building!
The angry, deranged people have crawled back under their rocks, only to be awaken the next Christmas season, when the new Air Jordan's are on the market. We no longer fear of getting pepper sprayed at the local Wal-mart. Our bodies are looking forward to the extra pounds leaving, with promises of a healthier lifestyle. Aunty is on her way back to her small apartment where her cat awaits her return. She mumbles to herself that she will never visit this crazy family again! Little one tosses the new toy aside only to pull pots and pans out of Grammie's cabinet. Grammie makes a note to herself...New Year resolutions are made! Worries appear on the foreheads of many, as the credit card bills have already started to come in. Sanitation Engineers awake to curse the day they took this job! The mailmen are sipping wine in the back of the post office toasting to a job well done!
What happens the day after Christmas to us plain folk? What kind of ‘after holiday’ person are you? I would like to offer my thoughts, reflections, and total outrageous thinking. I am blaming this hub on all the Christmas cookies or eggnog that I took in. I can not be totally responsible for the content of this hub!
Are you the one lying on the couch with your feet up, sipping some wine, and thinking about taking down the Christmas decorations? Maybe you will or maybe you will not. Maybe after a few glasses Santa’s elves will make an encore and put everything up for you.
Are the dishes still in the sink? You have done all the cooking and the thought of cleaning up is just too much to bare. Surely, someone in the household will take pity on you and do the dishes. I can only offer some thoughts. Fake a migraine…go to bed…If you wake up and the dishes are still there…time for Theraflu…put on the pouty, sick face, and retreat to your bedroom. Do not forget your Christmas stocking, filling it the brim with cookies, chocolate, and nuts. Comfort foods are necessary.
Did you give all your food away or is your frig stuffed to the max with left overs? What do you do about the fruitcake that was not eaten? Aunty is staying past Christmas and constantly wants to cut the fruitcake. What in the world do you do? I have the perfect solution. Tell Aunty that you have been waking up during the night and had craving for fruitcake. Secretly feed it to your chickens! Oh, you do not have chickens. So sorry…I bet if you freeze it, you could re-gift for next year…I am just sayin!
The next thing we have to think about is the gifts we received that we did not like so much…Did I say not like…I mean the ones that did not fit… Aunty gives you a lovely striped sweater with a big reindeer on it, and its nose lights up. How wonderful!
“Oh Aunty thank you! It is truly lovely but… Uh…Aunty…I am so sorry it is a bit snug…you got it at Wal-mart? Perfect! OH NO... I can return it…please don’t bother yourself!”
If you are like me…I am thinking of ways to hide the grandchildren so that when the time comes for them to leave, they will not be on the plane with their parents. I have thought of a few tactics that you may find useful.
What girls? You mean the two cuties that came with you? I have no idea!
But you said I could keep them!
Can you say Grammie and Papa? Now do it crying,,, really loud!
“I WANT MY GRAMMIE AND PAPA!”
Good job? Here’s a cookie!
Sorry kids...Papa and I were just playing hide and seek with the girls… didn't mean to make you miss your plane! (Grammie and Papa high five as kids continue to look for children)
If all these fail…pack plenty of kleenex as you say your goodbyes.
Concentrate on the New Year with a renewed heart…
Think good thoughts, dream big dreams, love deeper, hold longer, hug more, say what you think, be real, spread kindness, open hands, open heart, let go, forgive others, forgive self, keep faith, lastly…give that Aunty a big hug!

Sounds like your Christmas was a blast! We had a lovely time too, one of the gifts made me laugh so hard my ribs hurt! I still laugh when I remember it but yesterday, I found it in the trash! I wonder who did that and why. May be it was an accident.
Scott has asthma so catches colds rather easily. He has a breathing machine to open his bronchial tubes. Love, Susie
Wow! It took me 5 minutes to get to the comment section. You have soooo many visitors! Sweet hub! My 2 "far away" kids and families didn't make it down this year. One family came after New Years though. Others, we mailed their gifts. My daughter said, "it's too stressful traveling that far with the kids." Can't blame her! Her hubby had to work which meant a trip alone. Sorry, Allie...I miss you guys! My husband was sick all day, says he caught everyones cold at our Christmas Eve party. We stayed home and took naps. Nice and restful! God bless, Sunny Day.
Quite a great article. You just described it well - what happens after christmas. I really think something should be done to change the trend. A great piece!
Sharyn, enjoy the coat. You may not have worn it yet but you will for many years. My husband took me earlier in the month and told me to pick one. He got fed up with my layers because it was getting thin. He also got fed up with me replacing coats for all the kids, who lost theirs, while I went without. He told me they are grown and need to start keeping track of their stuff.
I actually did go to local thrift stores a couple weeks ago and they had nothing. I still am not thrilled about spending $80 on a coat for myself. I never spend that much on anything for me. But I really needed it. The one I have - I've been wearing for maybe 7 years or so. (sad) The zipper finally broke last year. But I'll be honest with you, I have not worn it yet. I've thought about taking it back. I start thinking all that I can do with $80.
VERY FUNNY SUNNIE! You summed up the craziness of the holidays very well. On Monday, Dec. 26, the day after Christmas, I decided I was going to do a little shopping. I wasn't able financially to do a lot for the holiday but I really needed to get myself a winter coat. I started out at JC Penney's. OMG, first I could not find a parking spot. The store was so packed, I swear there was not enough oxygen. I believe many stores, with their HUGE AFTER CHRISTMAS SALES, were busier than before the holiday. I was also shocked to see all the restaurant parking lots packed with cars. Didn't people have left over food from the weekend? I truly was amazed and couldn't wait to get back home. I did get a nice warm coat for $200+ below retail. But seriously, do you think I would ever pay retail? $280 not! I hope you've had a pleasant week "in between" and a wonderful new year!
Sharyn
I like your thoughts and spin on the day after Christmas. Very entertaining!! : )
Oh my gosh,
The comments are as funny as this adorable piece, Sunnie. I am so glad I happened upon it 'a tad late'!
As I was laughing my head off, I realized with a start that 'I AM Auntie' in my family now...oh my (LOL)!
Voted UP and all across the board, mar.
Sunnie: As a spiritual person I am always on a spiritual high serving God, BUT, I must say that the human side of me is breathing a sigh of relief. I have never been able to get into the excitement brought around by "Santa" although I do believe, I cannot get into the commercialized version of bigger better best or keeping up with the Jones's. The whole thing is supposed to be a rememberance of the Day God gave man a gift, instead it turns out to being a time of parties, getting drunk, getting stuffed and spending. God becomes all but forgotten.
Hi Sunnie,
No no sign of the book yet, I am not sure how long they take anyway.
I have just sent the final manuscript for My Beautiful Rock Rose as well so I will have to be very patient which is a little difficult -lol-.
I think I will wait for the first Billy and Bobby to be published before I send the next one in !!!
Oh this waiting game is no fun is it ??!!-lol-
Brilliant Sunnie, as always.
I hope you had a great Christmas as we did here.
I have to give this one an up up and away and next on the agenda will be the New Year!!!
Take care my dear friend.
Eddy.
Things are still pretty hectic here, I'm just taking a bit of time out to catch up with you all!
This was a great read Sunnie, loved it so funny and voted up!
Sunnie this was wonderful. The day after Christmas I curled up with a blanket and watched Christmas stories on TV. Now I am refreshed and getting ready for other family arriving for New Years.
Hi Sunnie,
I had a stress free Christmas but I have been eating left over christmas goodies for breakfast. lol
Voted up up and away!
Happy New Year!
Sunnie Girl,
Have you been mixing my Monster Blue with your Egg Nog? I'm theorizing that you're writing with a sugar AND a B-Complex/Ephedra high! (Grin!)
After reading this, I'm concerned that I may have a nightmare of morphing into a Cat-Lady-Auntie pushing fruit cake! (GAK!!)
I didn't receive any fruit cake this year, but if I have any late arrivals, I'm mailing it to you as a donation for chicken feed. All the other chickens in the county will be crossing the road to get to your farm, since your coop will be rated as THE place to live!!

I thought i was the only one who was glad it was all over..Knowing your loved one returned home safely and relaxing at the computer, now that's nice..Really Enjoyed sunnie..Made me smile..
Oh this was so fun and funny! I was cracking up when you suggested feeding the fruit cake to the chickens and hiding the grandkids!
Day after Christmas is my husband's birthday so the feast must continue- it's a tradition that we go out to eat with our neighbor who was also born on 12/26!
Hope you had a great holiday.
Thanks for this cute and funny read to brighten up the day after Christmas. Voted up across the board.
Thanks Mike. I looked in all of her drawers and nothing. I looked under the bed but didn't find a thing. The couch is against the wall so nothing can get back there. I did move it just the the other day to vacuum under it. It takes Katy and I both. That is the heaviest sofa we've ever had. It is heavier than most sofa-beds and I won't have one of them, they are too hard to move.
Poor auntie... At least you didn't say anything about the weird uncle, that would be me :-)
Oh, how very funny! We had a lovely Christmas and today (the26th) we are spending a quiet day ah home cleaning and eating yummy leftovers. I am so glad you got to see your loved ones Sunnie.
Great fun. Good, timely topic. Sending you an email.
I agree with mckbirdbks!
Luckily I don't use credit cards but I am BROKE! I hope you enjoyed your holidays as much as my fiance did! I was so tired I could hardly enjoy my dinner.
Hi Sunnie, glad you survived Christmas! I just barely did. I had a wonderful dinner with family and some friends. Now, everyone has gone, and my house is TOO quiet. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Interesting read, especially the CC bills part, and the mailmen sipping wine :)
Over here, headed by a tide of Chinese frantically clutching pound notes, people are in serious combat over the Boxing Day Sales! All the big London department stores have their doors open and folk are rushing in ready to buy anything as long as its discounted. Madness! Christ would be turning over in his...Heaven? Christmas...Bah Humbug! Thank de lawd it's over...Bob
Sunnie, thansk for a nice, funny and heartwarming reflection of yesterday. Boxing Day in the UK today - leftover turkey sandwiches, booze and chocolates and hubby did my dishes, bless him. Happy Holidays.
I had quite a peaceful and profitable Christmas Day. I participated and created some forums and had a fitful slumber. I am anticipating the year 2012. Great hub, by the way. I hope all is well with you, Sunnie Day. Peace and Happy Felicitations to you and your family!
Becky, look in Katy's sock drawer, then under the bed on the far side. Those are some of the favorite places around here. Santa may be heading back via your way, I'll just catch a ride and look behind the sofa.
I am glad to hear you get help. Years ago I discovered refuge in the kitchen from Thanksgiving chatter. After the fifth year the stories never changed, but they did keep on telling them. After the tenth year I found out the stories were made up...lol
"Need any help?"
"No, no, you go on, sit down, I got this"
(true story)
Mike, you can come to my house next. LOL!! If you can find my missing glasses, I would appreciate it. It is getting rough to get a drink around here and I buy four glasses a month.
haha I do the dishes all the time. There is a reason for that, "I like clean dishes'. Hey wait, have I been tricked....."Hello?, anybody?, HELLO?"
I'll just let myself out.
Nice Sunnie. Grab a chair. I'll finish off those dishes in the sink, oh, and under the table, and behind the sofa... There is a little wine left in the bottle. You just grab the keyboard, fluff up the pillows on the grandchildren's hiding place and smile at the parents with an innocent smile. There should be enough food to last several days without you cooking again. Cheers.
Hi Sunnie, I am so glad that you have enough energy to write. I am too worn out to hardly type this. I sat down and fell asleep. It was a good thing I put the food away first because they didn't even finish clearing the table. They get to do that tomorrow. I am not cooking for two days all by myself and then clearing and washing too. Cute ruminations. I am impressed that you want to keep them. See, I am too tired to even think organized, My thoughts are back and forth. Love ya, I'm going to bed now.
haha loved this Sunny... the aftermath of Christmas day.
The dishwasher is my best friend... after my computer of course.
I could just see you in a stripped sweater with a big reindeer on it, and its nose lights up.
I know the feeling of the house being so quiet and empty after everyone has gone.
Sit and have a glass or few of wine before you tackle those dishes.
Tomorrow is another day.
Sniff! Sniff! Glory to God! For letting us live long enough to see his Glory....
Wow! too preachy I think!!
Thanks Sunnie for the words and your story. It gives us positive thoughts and recharge our batteries for the new year that is amost here. Have a good night friend
LORD
Don't worry, the grandkids will be back soon!
Sunnie so funny and so true.. Made me smile.. Have a wonderful evening..
Happy New year to you
debbie
