The Way to a Child's Heart! Read to Them!
59
Today I had the nicest surprise in the mail. I opened a big yellow envelope to find many wonderful drawings from Mrs. Brown's first grade class. It also contained a thank you note and a picture of me reading to them. I can not tell you the joy I felt as I looked at each picture.
I remember when my book had first been published, I knew my first stop would be to contact my school that I had worked at to read to the children. I felt such excitement as they came in one by one to sit in front of me. This was a little confusing for them because they had known me as their school nurse. One little girl blurted out, "You are the nurse!" I could not help but laugh. From nurse to author who would have ever thought. Surely not me!
Children love having someone read to them! I know I used to read to my children many a nights before they went to sleep. The love of books needs to be encouraged from the time they enter the world. I loved looking up to see a giggle, a smile, or a suprised face!
One of the many things I have always loved to do with my children and grandchildren is to color, paint, and have plenty of play doe ready to play with. They did not like sitting at the table by themselves while I was in the other room. They liked me to participate and be present. That is how children learn their colors, shapes, and to create ideas! It is a time that we as adults can make an investment in their hearts.
I love to gift books to my grandchildren. I really try to shop for that special book! Recently my granddaughter turned three and I sent her a book on being a big sister to her 15 month old sister Mary Anna. My son called so I could hear her opening her gift. "Oh its a book!" She really loved it! Watching the students listen to me as I read to them, made my heart so full. It was not about promoting my book but sharing a story dear to my heart to the little ones I had come to love so much.
Taking the time to mail me these wonderful pictures was so special. As parents and grandparents this little gesture is so important. This hub was my thank you to the wonderful children who took the time to thank me. It was such a special time that I will never forget.
To the students at Taylor Creek, I love and miss you! Thank you for my beautiful pictures and thank you note!
I would like to encourage you as a writer to go to your local schools and volunteer to read a book. The teachers can alway use the help. It is such a small amount of time that makes such a big impact.
They love special speakers. You may be more of the artistic type. Creating a special project and introducing it to the teachers, may be just what she needs to bring out the artistic side in that child.
If you are writing a children's book and have one published, please take the time to volunteer at your local schools. They will love to hear your story. Sometimes publishing a book is more than marketing and making money. What is a better way to capture the beautiful attention of a child, than by reading to them.

One of my earliest memories is my dad sitting in the hallway, reading bedtime stories to my sisters and I in our rooms.
Great Hub, Sunnie!
This was the best Hub I read today!!!! :)
What a great gift to receive back. The drawings are just precious! I love reading to my grandkids, it gives me the opportunity to act silly as I change voices for each character. They respond in kind.
Hi Sunnie, I couldn't agree with you more about the importance of reading aloud to kids. How else do they learn what it's all about? Congratulations on getting your book published! I'm inspired by that. I'll have to send you my list of questions about that privately, LOL. Enjoyed the hub - thanks for sharing!
Books were always my favorite gift to receive as a child. Reading to children is so very important! Congratulations on your book being published. These drawings are precious. Votes up and SHARED with followers.
I would love to be read aloud to also. Teens love it, tweens love it, and of course the little guys eat it up. Reading aloud to students increases background knowledge, increases vocabulary, enhances prosody, and is a great commercial for reading. Your students are very fortunate to have you as their teacher.
Hi Sunnie
How beautiful and sweet!
Voted up and away!
Take Care
That was so considerate of the students and the teacher. Obviously your time was well spent. To see those precious faces light up must have been unforgettable.
What a precious surprise you recieved in your email..I am happy for you. You are an inspiration to us all to do more. I love the Carppenters..Thank you..
Way to go Sunnie. Reading to my granddaughters is our special bonding time, one day they'll be reading to me. Best of luck with your book!:)
Reading is just so important to young children. One earns so much through reading. Books and the love of reading should be instilled in a child's life fro a very early age.
It's always amazing to read to children, you as the adult sometimes get into the role and it amazing how the kids respond to that. I love reading to children too.
Sunnie if I were you I would frame those works of art, they might be worth a lot of money in the future.
Hi Sunnie, this is so sweet, like you I love reading to my grandchildren as I did to my children. The magic of reading a child's story book to a child I think is still often unsurpassed by other activities enjoyed together, don't you think? So hard not to get lost in them at times. X
I really like this hub. Our children need us to keep their imagination growing and active. Reading to them keeps the relationship between parent and child a close nuturing one, strong and healthy, nice job.
So colorful! Teaching and reading to our children can prevent future wars with no meaning. I have once inpersonated a clown for my wife's class children, and they cna move you with their hearts, smiles and attention!
Glad you got rewarded in your heart Sunnie!

SD - I wish sometimes someone would read to me. I read a lot and it would take some of the burden off of me.
Great advice and a great Hub written by the master writer herself.

I really enjoyed reading your hub. I am off today to read a story to the local parent and toddler group and as I was reading your hub I was getting ideas on how I was going to present my little story. Thank you. PS The video was a beautiful touch.
Loved seeing the pictures and reading about your experience. I remember those wonderful days when I taught elementary school and had the class write thank you notes with pictures, too. Memories are great...and you have shared your memory with us. Thank you so much.
The added picture is great. I had forgotten how much I liked The Carpenters.

Each hub you write brings joy to your readers. I can just imagine what a treat this was for the students. As your friend I was a big congratulations. The students taking the time to thank you with their drawings is unique and special.
Now as the marketing director, I am thinking a link is in order. Or go ahead and just ignore the marketing dept.
