Lets Talk About B12

Have you taken your B12 today?
There have been many things written about B12 and it may not always be easy to understand, as there are conflicting views out there. Is it necessary to take B12 or not? Do vegans really have to worry about B12? As I share this information, I want you to know this is my story, and I would not want it used to diagnose another person’s similar symptoms. Should you have these type problems, it is always good to see your physician before taking any over the counter medication.
I would like to tell you a little bit about Vitamin B12, if you are not familiar with this vitamin. It was discovered as a cure to a condition known as pernicious anemia, which is directly related to a vitamin B12 deficiency, which is an autoimmune disorder. You need B12 to make red blood cells, which carry oxygen through your body. Not having enough B12 can lead to anemia, which means your body does not have enough red blood cells to carry out this function. This can make you feel weak and tired, lightheaded, pale skin, sore, red tongue or bleeding gums feel sick to your stomach and lose weight, diarrhea, or constipation.
What causes vitamin B12 deficiency anemia? This disorder destroys cells in the stomach that actually secrete the intrinsic factor that helps us absorb B12. We usually get our B12 from the foods we eat such as eggs, milk, and cheese. If you do not have the intrinsic factor, B12 cannot be absorbed into the body causing a multiple of symptoms and can lead to death.
Lack of B12 can happen to anyone and especially for a non-meat eater such as me. However, I did used to eat meat and still found I was walking around with this problem. Many people do not know they are on the low end of norm, and they are experiencing symptoms contributed from low B12. While our body does store b12, levels may change due to diet or lacking the intrinsic factor to help absorb the B12. When a child’s diet is poor, they are more at risk for low B12.
In my early twenties, I was diagnosed with low B12, and was told I should take a supplement. I did for a while, felt better, and then I let it go by the wayside when I felt better. Even though at times I did not feel like I should, I never contributed it to low B12. Call it being young and immature with a selective memory of what I should and should not do. I just did not think it was that big of deal.
I have always had good teeth and went to the dentist regularly. One day I find out in my early thirties I have a gum disease called Gingivitis. Are you kidding? I hardly have more than three cavities in my mouth. The dentist explained some people are prone to bad gums…did the years of being low in B12 cause this? I have found out more recently this is very possible. Who would have thought?
About three years ago, I decided to become a vegan…not a 100 percent but very close. I read all I could on the subject and due to a multiple of health problems seeping up on me like obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol; I knew I needed to make a change fast. I jumped into being a Raw Vegan. It worked I lost tons of weight, no longer a diabetic, no hypertension, and my cholesterol is normal. I cannot say enough about that. There was one concern lurking in my mind. I somehow remembered the time in my early twenties the diagnosis I was given.
I read where many vegans have to take a supplement such as B12 found in meat products. This is where the conflict begins. I also read that we store up to three years’ worth of B12 in our bodies. Well I am sure I have enough stored. Therefore, I will just wait. I did not take a supplement of B12, I thought I would wait and see how I feel. I must have had a low level to start because I began to have symptoms of muscle weakness, depression, tiredness, and aches in my legs within the end of my first year becoming Vegan. We were on a trip and I remember feeling so tired and weak. I could hardly walk up and down the stairs to our Hotel room. I remember telling my husband I think my B12 is low. This was just a guess on my part, only because of my past, and I knew I was a vegan. Once we got home, I began to take B12 liquid and within a few days, all my symptoms were gone.
Like many other things concerning my health that I have let go by the wayside in the past, I once more have neglected taking my B12. Recently I found myself once more having the symptoms coming upon me again... As I said before I am horrible at taking any medications. This time my back is affected. I had pulled it a few months ago and it took forever to heal. It finally did get better but there was this lingering ache in the middle of my back that I had never had before. The muscle aches began in my arms and then my legs, especially at night. Sometimes I felt like an old woman walking around. I just did not have the energy I think I should have had. This time I realized that I had not taken my B12 in how long? I pulled it out of the cabinet and began taking it once more. Well what do you know? I begam tp have energy, my legs stopped hurting at night, and my back no longer has that nagging muscle pain. That little cloud of sadness that tried to attach itself to me has disappeared. B12 is truly my miracle cure.
I can assure you this is not a promotion for selling B12 and there will not be a link at the bottom where to buy some B12. After years of toying with this, I wanted to share this with you, as there are many walking around thinking, “what is the world is wrong with me.” To think a simple solution is possible and may be the answer. I am fifty-one and just found out about B12 three years ago, not counting the time in my twenties when I did not pay attention. It is worth looking into and if it makes you feel better then you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I still consider myself a vegan except I do love eating the eggs from my chickens, which does contain B12. I have decided that I cannot go without this vitamin B12. I do not know if I will ever find out if I am one of those with low levels, as with the insurance these days, the Doctors have to go by what your insurance will allow them to bill. Unless I am severely sick, I guess I will never really know.
Just a side note, I went to three doctors about my back; they all said it was muscle and prescribed muscle relaxers and Motrin. Not one Dr. mentioned the possibility of a B12 deficiency. I mentioned it to the third Doctor who was the one who said to start taking the supplement and it if helps. If you have a good insurance that will let your Doctor randomly take a blood test, then it may be worth looking into.
As I close, I am curious if any one suffers with low B12, has had the symptoms, and possibly been cured of some of these symptoms by taking the supplement b12.
I hope this hub has shed some light on the vitamin b12.

Hi Sunnie,
Thank you for sharing this important information. Vitamin supplements can be very confusing. I used to make up my own daily packets but haven't in a few years. I don't quite remember if I included B12. I really need to do current research and get back to it. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for this article, Sunnie. I have been thinking that I need B12, as I am feeling more tired lately, and my diet is lacking due the economy of high prices in the market. I noticed that I have decreased my meat consumption. And although, I eat whole grains, vegies and fruits and cheese, I still feel like I need something else. You have just given me the nudge to take my Vitamins more. Thanks for the encouragement.
Hi Sunnie,
Glad B12 has helped you. I am a big believer in natural medicine and vitamins.
Voted up and awesome.
Hi Sunnie,
A brilliant hub,so well presented ,interesting and will benefit so many.
A vote up /interesting/useful here without a doubt.
Take care and have a great day.
Eiddwen.
My doctor perscribed B12, I did not have any symptoms, but do have more energy since taking it.
Cook your fajitas in the dehydrator! Then they won't burn, lol
..well I don't need B-12 - because my favorite vitamin is SUNNIE DAY - and I take it once a day - to keep the doctor away but the doctor intervenes anyway and says I hear you have a pretty and talented gal in your life who takes all of your woes away - and I say Doc - you're right and her name is SUNNIE DAY.

Sunnie this is great. at one time i had to take B12 due to low iron, in fact, around that time, i had to have 6 pints of blood before i could have surgery. I remember i felt tired all the time. I am now in good health. I take no meds. except calcium and a baby ASA. I exercise, ride a bike, walk on the treadmill, i weigh 110 lbs. I make sure i eat healthy foods. I do wish i could become a vegetarian like you, as you know from my Hub, i tried and failed, but i have cut down on meat, hopefully i can give it up someday. Thank you for sharing your story, i'm sure it will help someone...Cheers
Sunny, I process all my meat and I get it the hard way. I enjoy bologna, hot dogs peperoni anf just all you can think of. I hve a large meat mixer for adding the spices that make the flavor and a large dehydrator for jerky and fruits. You can put a back strap in the slicer at 1/4 inch thick slices about 4 to 6 inches round and pull them from the dehydrator when they are just passing the grey to the brown of jerky then layer them like a angled stack of cards and pour Aujus over them for french dip sandwiches that melt n your mouth or brown gravy and mashed taters, corn or other veggie, homemade bread and hurt yourself on a treat you just can't buy. I love it. A great gift from God!
Peace,
dust
Great Hub Sunnie...I've taken Balanced B's for as long as I can remember. All the B's are important. I've always felt they gave me Strength and Energy and I feel good, less depression. A Win, win, situation. You've given a lot of good pointers and reasons for taking this wonderful supplement. Hope others will follow suit.
Sunnie, great article, I'm thinking the weight loss helped with borderline diabetes more than anything but B12 is an important mainstay. No meat on the table = no dusty in the chair lol. This house is pretty carnivorous and eggs are what's for breakfast I eat like a horse, 6 eggs every day and elk or venison sausage minus any added fat. The wild meat is lean and a good sausage mix contains binders to make links or patties stay together. I found that I can buy the binder for burger meat and add no fat to get patties to stay together. Season mixes for my meat blender that just mixes meat and seasonings by hand crank is good for pepperoni, bologna, salami and more so at hunting season it takes until January to get it all processed by hand. I keep a wad of jerky in my jaw like chewing tobacco just about all the time.
I chose insulin over pills for my diabetes and I lost 50 pounds with the heart surgery this year and so far I check my glucose and it's staying 91 to 110 at rest and lower at active times so I munch my jerky to keep it above 70 and all of my ldl and hdl are pretty as a picture I just had to do a few mega doses of C to get back to healthy levels but felt no changes in feeling better. The back side of 50 is time to pay attention to all levels. Fortunately the VA pulls full panels once a year. Many complain that the VA is poor in their service, I'm alive to argue that point. They will get special wavers and bring in civilian specialists for things like installing pig heart valves, I stopped snoring and began oinking in my sleep. LOL great article,
Blessings,
Dusty
I do not take a B12 supplement. I do take a multivitamin and eat healthy foods. I practically never suffer from illness or injury and have lots of energy. I walk two miles every morning. I think that helps. This is an interesting Hub and you have given us great information.
Great article, Sunnie! : ) Very helpful to know these things. I need to let my nephew know as he suffers from a few of your symptoms you listed. Its good to know. Thanks for the share.
Selective memory in your youth, huh? That made me chuckle. Thanks to you, Sunnie I will do some research on B12. I don't really have any symptoms but I do know that the B vitamins are important. Thank you for the good hub.
I'm lactose intolerant, so I have to find my B12 sources through supplemenation and other food sources. I've found outstanding supplement options from the Vitamin Shop. They offer discounts and free shipping deals. When I get my B12 hit, I'm like the energizer bunny. Thank you for the information!
Good morning Sunnie. I am glad you were able to identify the problem and are now feeling better.
Before I can say that I lack B12, I would need to lose some weight and start to exercise. This maybe my cure....Thanks for sharing this valuable information with us Sunnie.
I hope all is well in your neck of the woods.
Take care.....Mary
Thanks for sharing this article. I suffer from a B12 deficiency and underwent b12 shots for 6 months. Once the levels were where they needed to be, I stopped. Then life changed for me. I became unemployed and lost my health insurance. I have not had a b12 shot for over a year and have felt the effects of a low B12 lately.
I changed my diet. I bought the vitamin enriched waters and I'm looking for ways to feel better. Your article is timely for me. I have never used a B12 suppliment before but I will consider it.
Thanks for sharing.
I have had a lot of the problems but mine is from Graves disease. My thyroid is gone now and I take the replacement pills but am still tired and achy. Going to get my level checked again soon. I may need a different amount of synthroid.
